Contribution to sustainable development

Today we are faced with a serious environmental threat and environmental issues are part of our daily life. At Derome we are working on a number of fronts to do what we can to contribute to the environment.

The Derome Group's environmental commitment

• Wood – Promote greater use of wood

• Bioenergy – Deliver biofuel

• District-heating plants – Complete heating concept with biofuel as the energy source.

• Passive homes – Develop low-energy housing

• Solar heating – Adopt solar energy systems

• Windpower Self-sufficiency in electricity by 2012

• Energy-efficiency – Continue reducing energy consumption in production

• Property management – Reduce energy consumption in rental properties

• Forestry – Help forest-owners manage their forests in an environmentally-aware manner

• Knowledge – Increase the environmental awareness of employees

Our entire business is based on wood. Wood is climate-neutral and contributes to a sustainable environment. The raw material we process comes from sustainable Swedish forestry, where replanting is prerequisite. Another environmental benefit is the proximity of our raw materials which are sourced from local forests. Construction of timber houses contributes to a better environment due to the ability of wood to bind carbon dioxide, in contrast to steel and concrete. Timber construction is ten times more eco-friendly than concrete construction, for example. We have long been building houses in timber and are now also constructing multi-storey houses.

An ongoing process

Our environmental engagement is under constant development and we are working actively to ensure the products we manufacture and sell can be reused or recycled with the lowest possible use of resources. We process by-products from the forest and sawmills into biofuel and new energy. We are a major producer of biofuel, and as well as meeting internal needs we also supply over a hundred thousand houses and businesses with bioenergy. We build low-energy walls and passive houses to reduce energy consumption, and supply heating systems based on renewable energy sources. In addition, we’re aiming to become self-sufficient in renewable electricity from windpower and other sources.

Our activities are largely environmentally-certified in accordance with ISO 14001 and our sawmills are PEFC-certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes).
