Wood & Responsible Forestry

Wood is an important material throughout Derome's value chain. Our experience spans forestry, sawmills, manufacturing and construction, providing knowledge of the material from forest to finished building.

As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When wood is used in products and buildings, the carbon remains stored in the material during its period of use.

Building with wood

Wood has properties that make it suitable for many types of construction. Its low weight, strength and natural insulating properties create opportunities for efficient production and industrial construction methods.

At Derome, wood is used in products, homes and residential developments across our value chain.  We continue to develop construction methods, materials and industrial processes together with customers, researchers and industry partners.

In many construction applications, wood can be used instead of materials such as steel and concrete. When trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and carbon remains stored in the wood during its period of use.

Innovation & Collaboration

Why we choose to build with wood

  • Renewable raw material
  • Stores carbon during its period of use
  • Strong in relation to its weight
  • Natural insulating properties
  • Suitable for industrial construction methods
  • Can be designed for reuse and adaptability
  • Responsible Forestry

Responsible Forestry

Forests are one of our most important natural resources. They provide raw materials for construction and support a wide range of plant and animal species.

To ensure access to forest raw materials over time, forestry needs to balance production, environmental considerations and long-term management.

At Derome, forests are managed in accordance with established forestry practices and certification standards. Consideration is given to biodiversity, cultural heritage and other environmental values throughout the forestry cycle.

One of Derome's strengths is our value chain. By working across multiple stages, from forestry and sawmills to manufacturing and construction, we gain valuable experience and knowledge that supports the continued development of our products and building methods.

We collaborate with approximately 1,500 forest owners and support them throughout the forest lifecycle, from planning and management to harvesting and regeneration.

Our approach to Responsible Forestry

  • Forestry certified according to FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)* and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)  standards
  • Consideration for biodiversity and environmental values
  • Protection of cultural heritage areas
  • Regeneration following harvesting
  • Long-term forest raw material supply
  • Dialogue with forest owners based on their objectives
  • From Forest to Finished Building

Innovation in Wood Construction

Innovation is an important part of our development work. Through projects such as Hoppet, Klivet and Pilen, we explore new materials, construction methods and technical solutions.

One example is the timber foundation developed within the Pilen project. Climate calculations indicate lower emissions compared with a reference solution using a traditional concrete foundation.

Project-specific results are based on climate calculations for the respective projects. Please contact us if you would like more information about methodology or results.
